How We Interview at Lively

At Lively, finding the right mix of people who can bring new perspectives to the company in addition to their expertise, is very important. That’s why our interview process is set up to look beyond whether or not candidates can “do the job”. Yes, job-related expertise and success are important. But at Lively, we’re also looking for a “culture-add” as opposed to a “culture fit”.

To us, a culture-add is someone who embodies our values of empathy, integrity, accountability, determination, and building something people love, and in addition, can bring a fresh perspective due to their life experience and interests. Our interview and hiring process is designed to get a 360 degree view of each candidate to ensure we’re assessing the whole person as opposed to several lines on a piece of paper.

If you interview with Lively, this is what you can expect.

Step 1: Submit your resume

Every resume is read by a real person. We don’t use automated systems because we don’t want to miss out on a great candidate because the algorithm picked up on a word and removed the resume from the pool. In addition, we know you put thought and effort into your job application, and we want to give that effort the personal attention it deserves.

However, since every resume is read by a person, applying early (i.e. soon after the job is posted) can help ensure you receive a timely response and are included in the first round of interviews, if that’s appropriate. The more resumes that come in, the longer you might have to wait to receive a response.

Step 2: Phone interview

If we believe your resume shows you to be a good fit for the job, we will set up a phone interview. At Lively, we’ve found that phone interviews are better than video chats for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) purposes as they help to remove unconscious bias.

The purpose of this call is for the recruiter to get to know you a little better and so you can learn a little more about Lively. Ask any burning questions or raise concerns. We want to make sure Lively is a fit for you as well as you being a fit for Lively.  If we feel you’ve met all the qualifications needed for the role after the phone interview, we will move you to the next step.

Step 3: Interview with the hiring manager

In this video interview, the hiring manager will assess your hard and soft skills and experience, and give you more information about the role and its day-to-day requirements. You should leave this interview with an idea of what it would be like to work here. If the hiring manager is satisfied with your interview and feels you could do the job at a high level, they will move you to the next step.

Step 4: Interview with a member of the team or a project

Once you’ve completed your interview with the hiring manager, you may be given a project or writing exercise in order to gauge skills critical for the position. In addition to the project, you may also interview with a member of your future team. If everything is satisfactory, you will move to the final step.

Step 5: The final interview day

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the final leg of the hiring journey. During this roughly 2.5 hour process, you will complete back-to-back video interviews with executives, department heads, cross-functional team members, and have a values interview.

The values interview is always a part of this round and is one of the most important. Candidates will be interviewed by two volunteers within the company who have taken Lively’s values training seminars and who won’t be working directly with the candidate in their day-to-day duties. Every candidate is asked the same set of questions, all of which are meant to assess if and how the candidate embodies Lively’s core values.

Once you’ve completed these interviews, your job is done. We’ll debrief with everyone you’ve spoken with and connect with the hiring manager on whether or not we will be moving forward with an offer letter.

Step 6: The offer letter

You’re in! If we decide to extend you an offer letter, a recruiter will give you a call to share the good news. We’ll follow up that phone call with a written offer letter emailed to you for your review.

Lively’s “no ghosting” policy

At Lively, we appreciate every candidate’s time and the effort they’ve put into the interview process. That’s why we have a no ghosting policy. Regardless of where candidates are in the interview process with Lively, they will always receive some form of communication letting them know whether or not we will be moving forward.
